How many years does a
tampon take to decompose?

Change 2 Green Tampons

Regular Tampons

Change to Green goods are made from certified organic cotton and take only 5 years to decompose. They are made from natural materials, so they quickly become a part of nature again.

Goods made from plastics take 500 years to decompose. When plastic goods aren’t disposed of properly, they release nasty chemicals into the environment and threaten the ecosystem.

When an item is disposed of and ends up in a landfill, it needs to decompose or break down into its original elements to be incorporated into the natural environment again. When something decomposes, it’s nature’s way of recycling. Estimates for plastic range from 500 to 1,000 years!

Traditional materials used in goods and clothing can contain up to 8,000 chemicals used in the production, printing, and processing of textiles.

The materials that touch our body everyday contain a surprising number of chemicals. Even the average “100% cotton” product actually contains only 73% cotton. The remaining 27% consists of chemicals, resins, and binders used in farming and manufacturing.

The typical kiwi uses over 16,800 tampons or sanitary napkins in her lifetime. Typical tampons are made from plastic and contain nasty chemicals that persist in the environment for over 500 years. Change to Green tampons biodegrade in only 5 years. When you make the Change to Green tampons, you stop over 120kg of waste from being put on the Earth...one small change really adds up to a big difference!

According to the World Health Organization, 20,000 people die from cancer and miscarriages each year as a result of the pesticides used when growing traditional cotton.

It’s quite shocking to learn how deadly the nasty chemicals in traditional cotton are. With cotton farmers under increased pressure to return greater yields, they have turned to pesticides. Conventionally grown cotton uses more insecticides than any other single crop. Unfortunately this results in a deadly cycle, for the farmers and for the environment.

The nasty chemicals work at first, then the farmers need to buy more. The problem has gotten so bad that some farmers can no longer afford the pesticides — they are actually paying more for the nasty chemicals then the cotton is worth!

Traditional cotton farming is deadly, and it just doesn’t make sense. Organic cotton farming protects the environment, and the farmers. At Change to Green, our farmers are part of the ethical supply chain in our worldwide team. We’re like a big family, and no one in our family uses nasty chemicals.
